We can supply prescription shoes for a range of conditions:
-
Diabetes. The condition of having higher than normal blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes, you are at much greater risk of developing problems with your feet due to the damage raised blood sugars can cause to sensation and circulation. The importance of appropriate footwear and foot care should not be understated; in the UK hundreds of amputations occur every month as a result of diabetes complications (Diabetes UK)
-
Rheumatoid arthritis. The second most common form of arthritis in the UK. An autoimmune condition which can cause inflammation, pain, swelling and deformity. The rheumatoid foot is prone ulceration and should be treated with care.
-
Strokes. A serious condition that occurs when the blood supply to a section of the brain is cut off. This may result in varying degrees of paralysis and can present in the lower limbs as a drop foot, observed by the leg failing to appropriately lift and the foot scuffing the floor when you step forward. An Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) will help to raise the foot, reducing the likelihood of tripping. The type of AFO design varies on the level of need. Cosmesis is often at the forefront of consideration.
-
Chronic vascular conditions
-
Charcot foot. A potentially serious localised inflammatory condition that can occur in people who have significant nerve damage (neuropathy). The frontline treatment involves immobilisation either from a stock or custom ankle foot orthosis. If left untreated the architecture of the foot can change. Once the condition has settled, that can take many months; specialist footwear may be required to protect the feet or contain any resulting changes.
