What is the difference between podiatry and chiropody?
Podiatrist is the title used in the UK and many other English-speaking countries. A chiropodist is the name formerly used for a podiatrist in the UK; the two are used interchangeably, though the former has largely been dropped by the profession since around 2018.
A podiatrist must have the appropriate degree and be registered with the HCPC (Health & Care Professionals Council). A podiatry degree involves three years’ full time training focusing on the lower limb and foot. The training allows them to diagnose and treat people with arthritis, diabetes, ingrowing nails and sports related injuries, to mention just a few. With certain conditions, such as some ingrowing toenail pathologies, a podiatrist will carry out surgery under local anaesthetic.
Podiatry can be used to treat and manage:
-
Lower limb and foot conditions associated with diabetes
-
General nail health
-
Ingrowing toenails
-
Corns and callus
-
Verrucae
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and your team for all your help that I have received over the past six years. I cannot thank you enough for all your efforts in getting me mobile again after the loss of all my toes on my right foot, especially as I had been told at another clinic, to expect the leg to be amputated. You have not only given me back my mobility with your attention to detail and expert knowledge on feet and the footwear that you provided but you have restored my faith in the NHS.”
