What does an orthosis do?

An orthosis is an external device that supports, corrects and contains musculoskeletal deformities, injuries and abnormalities of the body. An orthosis may be used to:

  • Control, guide, limit and/or immobilise an extremity, joint or body segment for a particular reason

  • Restrict movement in a given direction

  • Assist movement generally

  • Reduce weight bearing forces for a particular purpose

  • Aid rehabilitation from fractures after the removal of a cast

  • Otherwise correct the shape and/or function of the body, to provide easier movement capability or reduce pain.

Does orthotics always refer to the feet?

No. Orthotic therapy encompasses the whole body. At Prescription Footwear Associates we concentrate on the feet and lower limbs but we can design, manufacture and fit a whole range of orthoses, including by special arrangement those for the upper body.

How does it work?

For the lower limbs we often use computerised gait analysis to study how you stand, walk or run. Depending on the problem, we can provide ready-made or custom-built insoles as well as lower limb orthoses.

At Prescription Footwear Associates our bespoke orthoses are made on-site. Our clinicians work closely with our skilled technicians to make sure that each device is perfectly designed according to your individual requirements.

"I went to see James yesterday. I had a very painful left foot - due to some corns. I can not praise this young man highly enough. He was kind and very patient with me! He removed the corns, and then went on to do my nails etc. I came away from the clinic with a 'new' pair of feet! This morning I can walk again with no discomfort whatsoever...instead of feeling like I was walking on glass! Thank you James."
