Choosing the right lower limb orthoses
Lower limb orthoses are designed to help speed up recovery after injury or surgery. They can also help individuals manage pain and some of the other symptoms of a range of conditions, such as arthritis and limb deformities.
Prescription Footwear Associates can supply off-the-shelf orthoses or bespoke designs manufactured on the premises to individual client requirements. Our clinicians will need to see you in order to recommend the correct device; we have flexible booking options available Monday to Friday. We can also provide other products, such as soft cast bracing.
Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO)
The AFO supports the lower limb and foot to control movement while walking. It is particularly helpful to people with drop foot syndrome, helping to stabilise the gait and prevent tripping. It can also be used to speed up recovery after injury or surgery and can provide protection against injury or ulceration in clients with diabetic neuropathy or other 'at risk' feet.
Patella Tendon Bearing Orthosis (PTBO)
The PTBO is a custom-made device designed to reduce weight on the foot and ankle by transferring it onto the lower leg and patella (the tendon connecting the knee and shin bone). It can be used for lower leg fractures, recovery after surgery, or to reduce pressure on severely arthritic or damaged joints and feet.
The PTBO can also treat Charcot foot syndrome and, like the AFO, can help heal or prevent ulcers and other complications associated with 'at risk' feet, particularly those with diabetic neuropathy.
Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO)
The KAFO is a long-leg orthosis extending from the foot to the thigh. It is often used for muscle weakness or paralysis associated with conditions such as muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, polio or spinal cord injury. The KAFO can also be used to promote the healing of broken bones and fractures, and can reduce pressure on arthritic or damaged joints.
Where appropriate, Prescription Footwear Associates can supply devices with automatically locking and unlocking knee joints, to help keep the muscles working and allow a more fluid walking style.
