Bespoke Insoles
These devices are made using either a foam impression, cast or scan of the foot. They are made to the individual requirements of each foot, providing shock attenuation, support and/or correction where needed and unloading the peak pressure areas by redistributing the weight more evenly through the plantar surface of the foot.
When wearing bespoke insoles, appropriately designed footwear is a major consideration. The orthosis should fit and complement the footwear in order to perform the designated task whilst at the same time allowing adequate room for the foot.
There are different types of insoles, depending upon the functional purpose; i.e. either Accommodative or Functional.
- Accommodative insoles are designed to accommodate the foot in a comfortable position without trying to correct any mal-alignments whilst preventing further deformation. These are typically used for the rigid foot which is a result of conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis.
- Functional insoles aim to prevent pathologic range of motion in the joints of the feet by correcting/realigning the structural position of the foot during standing and walking. The insole is tailored to the individual foot, providing support where it is required, depending upon the functional demands. The biomechanical support they provide means that standing, walking and running become less stressful and easier to perform.
